Pine tree flower stalk covered in pollen. In spring 2007 record pollen counts were affecting much of the USA. The pollen was produced largely by pine trees. According to the Allergic Disease and Asthma Center in Greenville,USA,the pollen count in the Capitol City soared to 4,862 particles per cubic metre of air during the last week of March 2007. This resulted in one of the worst allergy seasons in the U.S. in 26 years. The exceptionally high pollen count was largely due to a combination of above-average temperatures and lack of rain.
