Macrophage. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a macrophage cell in a breast cancer biopsy. Its nucleus is dark green. Mitochondria (yellow ovals) in the cytoplasm produce energy for the cell. Lysosomes (orange) contain enzymes for digesting foreign particles. Macrophages are a type of large white blood cell that recognise foreign particles and phagocytose (engulf and digest) them. Surrounding the macrophage are abnormal breast tumour cells (green,at right and top left). Magnification: x300 when printed 10 centimetres wide
