Macrophage. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a macrophage cell in a breast cancer biopsy. Its nucleus is brown. Mitochondria (dark pink ovals) in the cytoplasm produce energy for the cell. Lysosomes (red) contain enzymes for digesting foreign particles. Macrophages are a type of large white blood cell that recognise foreign particles and phagocytose (engulf and digest) them. Surrounding the macrophage are abnormal breast tumour cells (pale green,at right and top left). Magnification: x300 when printed 10 centimetres wide
