Solar power plant. Solar cells at the solar power plant in Saint-Pierre on Reunion Island in the Indian Ocean. Reunion Island is an overseas department of France,making this power plant France's largest rooftop photovoltaic plant. Opened in 2009 it can produce over 2,500 Mega-watt hours per year,equivalent to the annual consumption of 1,130 Reunion households,and preventing the emission of 2,150 tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. A further 100 megawatts of photovoltaic installations are expected to be added in 2025. The plant is designed to provide energy independence for the Island
