Juvenile king penguin moulting. Juvenile king penguin losing the soft downy feathers of a chick and gaining full adult plumage. King penguins (Aptenodytes patagonicus) live in large colonies in island groups in the sub-Antarctic. They are the second-largest of the penguins and can reach 95 centimetres in height. They gather in colonies by the thousands. These settlements are permanently occupied,as it takes 15 to 18 months for each pair to raise their single chick.
