Gentoo penguin feeding its chick (right). Gentoo penguins (Pygoscelis papua) are easily recognized by the wide white stripe extending like a bonnet across the top of their heads. They are the fastest underwater swimming penguins, reaching speeds of 36 kilometres per hour. They lay two eggs and both parents share incubation duties. The chicks remain in the nest until about 30 days before forming groups (creches). They moult into sub-adult plumage and go out to sea at about 80 to 100 days.
