Sarah Stewart (1905-1976),US oncologist,showing oncogenic (cancer-causing) virus particles. Stewart was the first to show that viruses causing cancer could be spread from animal to animal. She discovered the Polyomavirus in 1953,which causes tumours to develop in a wide range of species. The SE (Stewart-Eddy) polyomavirus is named after Stewart and her research partner Bernice Eddy,who successfully grew the virus in 1958. Photographed in 1971 | |
