A cochlea implant has an external microphone component (on the ear) to detect sounds from the environment,which then travel to a transmitter (above the ear,grey) connected to a receiver (not seen) in the scalp. The receiver converts the sounds to electrical impulses,which then travel along electrodes running from the receiver to deep within the cochlea. These make contact with the auditory nerve and allow the impulses to reach the brain. Hearing dogs alert their owners to sounds such as doorbells,telephones and emergency alarms or sirens
