Common sheep tick (Ixodes ricinus),light micrograph. The sheep tick is an arachnid, and has eight legs. The mouthparts (upper centre) form a piercing lance with spines, which face backward, making ticks difficult to remove. They can remain on the skin for several days but when they have filled their body with blood they then drop off. The common sheep tick can infect its hosts (which include sheep and humans) with Lyme's disease. Symptoms such as stiff muscles and joints, tiredness, fever, and lack of appetite, can cause sudden collapse. Magnification: x14 when printed at 10 centimetres high | |
