Aurora borealis simulation. Computer-generated,virtual-reality simulation of the movement of a charged particle (beams of light) in the Earth's magnetic field (represented by small blue sphere, centre right). This simulator is used to understand the aurora borealis and to investigate other 'surfatron' plasma behaviours. An offset double image (blue and red) is produced, which allows for 3D viewing with polarising glasses. A hand-held controller is used for navigation and control of the image. For a composite image of a researcher working with the simulation, see image C001/0338 | |
