Aurora borealis simulation. Composite image showing a researcher working with a computer-generated,virtual-reality simulation of the movement of a charged particle (beams of light) in the Earth's magnetic field (represented by small blues sphere, centre left). This simulator is used to understand the aurora borealis and to investigate other 'surfatron' plasma behaviours. An offset double image (blue and pink) is produced, which allows for 3D viewing with polarising glasses. The hand-held controller is used for navigation and control of the image. For an image of the simulation on its own see image C001/0340 | |
