Unpollinated poppy (image 1 of 3). Flowering parts of the shirley poppy (Papaver rhoeas) before pollination. At centre is the female reproductive organ, the capsule (green). The yellow segments on the surface of the capsule are the stigmatic surfaces where pollination occurs. At the base of the capsule are the male reproductive organs, the anthers, which produce pollen grains containing the male gametes. Here the anthers are full of yellow pollen grains. Shirley poppies are a garden variety of the common field poppy. For an image of the poppy after pollination see B786/583 and see B786/584 for a photo of the poppy after seed head formation | |
