Sunflowers. A group of blooming sunflowers,Helianthus sp. ,against the sky. The plant produces composite flowers:- the small, true flowers are clustered into a compact, round head which resembles a single flower. The sunflower heads bend towards the sun because a chemical, auxin, builds up in the shaded part of the stem causing these parts to grow more quickly. Sunflowers can be grown in dry soils from the equator to 55 degrees latitude. The plant is widely cultivated for its seeds which are used to make oil and as food for livestock.
