Macrophotograph of the bud of the oriental poppy,Papaver orientale. This is a perennial herbaceous plant with coarse hairy leaves. The unfolded red petals surround the flower's reproductive structures. At the centre is the female stigma,the pollen- receiving structure located on top of a large capsule (carpel) containing the ovaries. Surrounding the stigma is the male reproductive apparatus,consisting of numerous anthers supported on thin stamens. Pollen produced by the anthers is distributed by insects,notably bees which are attracted by the bright colour of the petals
