Photograph of a flower bud of the field (corn) poppy Papaver rhoeas, taken just prior flowering when the sepals (green, covered in fine hairs) lift away to expose the underlying red petals. The field poppy flourishes wild on railway banks, meadows & in poorly sprayed fields. They produce no nectar, but are prolific sources of pollen for bees, which are attracted by the bright colour of the petals. First in a sequence of five photographs | |
