| Root tip. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the root of a young oriental poppy (Papaver orientale) seedling. The numerous root hairs (white) increase the surface area of the root to maximise uptake of water and nutrients. At the very tip of the root is a hairless root cap which protects the root.
