Rafflesia flower (Rafflesia sp.). This genus of parasitic plant has the largest single flower of any plant in the world, with flowers ranging from 20 centimetres in diameter in to 100 centimetres in diameter, depending on the species. It parasitises Tetrastigma vines and is entirely dependent on its host for nutrition. It flowers for a short period only, around five days, during which a strong smell reminiscent of rotting meat is emitted from the flower. This serves to attract pollinating flies. It occurs in southern Thailand,Indonesia,Malaysia and the Philippines. Photographed at Poring Springs,Sabah,Malaysian Borneo | |
