| Stenotrophomonas maltophilia bacteria. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a sect- ion through Stenotrophomonas maltophilia bacteria. They are seen on a fractal background. These bacteria have also been placed in the genera Pseudomonas and Xanthomonas. The bacterium at upper right is dividing by binary fission to form two identical daughter cells. These Gram-negative rod-shaped (bacilli) bacteria live in soil,water and milk. As well as being pathogenic in plants,they can cause opportunistic infections in humans.
