Transmission electron micrograph (gold-shadowed) of the bacterium,Proteus mirabilis. It is an enterobacteria normally present in the human intestine, with potential pathogenic qualities. Infections of the urinary tract are the most common diseases caused by Proteus mirabilis. Often such infections occur in hospitals as a secondary infection in debilitated patients. This gram- negative bacillus bacteria has flagella (hair-like structures) on its surface. The lashing movement of these flagella gives the bacterium motility. It enables Proteus strains to spread rapidly as a film to infect tissue. Magnification: x20,000 at 6x8 inch size | |
