Scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a colony of Campylobacter jejuni growing on a blood agar plate. Members of this species of Gram-negative bacteria appear as spiral rods with a polar flagella (whip-like tail). C. jejuni is a recognized cause of food-poisoning in humans, especially in children & young adults. Contaminated poultry, meat and milk are sources of infection. Pet cats and dogs may transmit the organisms. Symptoms start with fever & acute abdominal pain, followed by diarrhoea. Recovery is usually spontaneous. Magnification: x20,000 at 8x10- inch size.
