Polishing cloth cross-section. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a cross-section through a diamond-containing polishing cloth (or lapping cloth). Three layers are seen here. Across bottom is the polishing surface (dark blue). The upper layer is a substrate (grey) with a central layer of embedded diamonds (thin grey layer at lower centre). Across top is more substrate, with the ragged appearance being caused by the argon ion bean that was used to cut this cross-section. The diamonds, one of the hardest known natural materials, act as an abrasive on the surface being pollished. Magnification: x1700 when printed 10cm wide | |
