Jules Dumont D'Urville. Engraving of Jules Sebastien Cesar Dumont D'Urville (1790-1842),French Antarctic explorer. D'Urville joined the navy at 17. In 1820,during an expedition to Greece,he recognised the recently-discovered Venus de Milo as an ancient statue and secured its purchase for France. In 1826 he began an expedition to find the missing explorer La Perouse during which he surveyed many Pacific islands. During 1837-40 he sailed to Antarctica and discovered the Adelie coast (named after his wife) and Joinville Island. His observations helped to prove that Antarctica was a large continent.
